Permaculture Methods is a Bangladesh-based platform for Permaculture training and consultancy. We help individuals, families, farmers, professionals, organizations and communities learn Permaculture and apply its ethics, principles and design methods to real places and practical challenges.
Our work is grounded in a simple understanding: a farm, homestead, garden or settlement is not merely a collection of separate elements. It is a living system shaped by relationships among soil, water, plants, animals, people, climate, culture and economy. When these relationships are carefully observed and thoughtfully designed, the whole system can become more productive, resilient and capable of sustaining life.
Through structured learning and site-specific consultancy, Permaculture Methods supports people in designing with nature rather than working against it.
Our Understanding of Permaculture
Permaculture is often understood only as organic farming, food gardening or a collection of environmentally friendly techniques. These practices may form part of Permaculture, but they do not represent the whole system.
Permaculture is an ethical design approach for creating resilient and mutually supportive relationships among people, land and the wider living world. It helps us understand patterns, connections, cycles and flows—and then use that understanding to make thoughtful design decisions.
Permaculture may be applied to:
Farms and agricultural landscapes
Rural and urban homesteads
Food forests and agroforestry systems
Soil and water management
Gardens and rooftop spaces
Housing and settlement design
Community initiatives
Education and livelihoods
Organizations and social relationships
The purpose is not to copy a fixed model. It is to develop the ability to observe each place carefully and create locally appropriate solutions.
Why Permaculture Methods Exists
Bangladesh is a living delta shaped by rivers, rainfall, fertile sediments, seasonal change and generations of local knowledge. Yet its landscapes and communities increasingly face soil degradation, declining biodiversity, waterlogging, groundwater depletion, pollution, climate-related hazards and growing dependence on costly external inputs.
These challenges cannot be addressed through isolated techniques alone. A pond, tree, crop, house, road or drainage channel affects many other parts of the surrounding system. An intervention that solves one problem may create another when these relationships are ignored.
Permaculture Methods exists to strengthen the capacity to see these connections and respond through integrated design.
We aim to make Permaculture:
Understandable without losing its depth
Practical without becoming a collection of disconnected techniques
Scientifically informed while respecting local knowledge
Relevant to the ecological and cultural realities of Bangladesh
Accessible to both beginners and experienced practitioners
Applicable from small homesteads to farms, institutions and communities
Our Vision
A future in which people possess the knowledge, skills and confidence to design resilient and life-supporting systems in cooperation with nature.
Our Mission
Our mission is to advance Permaculture learning and practice through high-quality training, contextual design consultancy and accessible educational resources.
We work to:
Develop practical Permaculture knowledge and design literacy
Support ecological and socially responsible land-use decisions
Strengthen the resilience of farms, homesteads and communities
Connect Permaculture principles with the realities of Bangladesh
Encourage observation, experimentation and continuous learning
Help transform knowledge into responsible action
What We Do
Permaculture Training
We provide structured learning opportunities for individuals, groups, communities and organizations. Our programmes combine theory, observation, design practice, discussion and field-based learning.
Training may include introductory courses, practical workshops, customized organizational programmes, specialized modules and comprehensive Permaculture design education.
Our training does not merely teach participants what to do. It develops the ability to understand a place, recognize relationships, assess needs and create an integrated design.
Permaculture Consultancy
Every site has its own history, patterns, opportunities and limitations. For this reason, our consultancy begins with observation rather than predetermined solutions.
We support the assessment and design of homesteads, farms, gardens, food forests, water systems, institutional landscapes and community sites. Depending on the project, consultancy may include site observation, client interviews, mapping, needs assessment, concept development, integrated design, implementation guidance and periodic review.
Our role is to help clients make informed decisions that are appropriate for their land, resources, capacity and long-term purpose.
Our Approach
Observe Before Designing
Good design begins by listening to the land and the people connected with it. We examine sunlight, water, wind, soil, vegetation, access, existing structures, seasonal patterns, risks, needs and available resources before recommending interventions.
Design Relationships, Not Isolated Elements
A pond is not only a waterbody. It may support irrigation, fish, biodiversity, cooling, nutrient cycling and emergency water storage. A tree may provide food, shade, habitat, mulch, wind protection and soil improvement. Permaculture design connects such elements so that they support one another.
Work with Place
Bangladesh contains diverse ecological contexts—from floodplains and wetlands to terraces, coastal landscapes, urban neighbourhoods and hill regions. A method suitable for one location may be unsuitable for another. Our work therefore responds to climate, ecology, culture, livelihood and local knowledge.
Integrate Knowledge with Practice
Training and consultancy are connected. Training builds the capacity to understand and design systems, while consultancy applies that capacity to specific places and challenges. Both require observation, participation, reflection and adaptation.
Design for Long-Term Resilience
We consider immediate needs alongside long-term ecological health. Our designs seek to reduce unnecessary inputs, make responsible use of resources, improve functional diversity and strengthen the capacity of systems to adapt to change.
Our Ethics
Our work is guided by the three foundational ethics of Permaculture:
Earth Care
Protecting and rebuilding the living systems that support all life—including soil, water, biodiversity and ecological processes.
People Care
Supporting human wellbeing, dignity, knowledge, participation, cooperation and the ability of people to meet their needs responsibly.
Fair Share
Using resources within reasonable limits, sharing surplus and creating opportunities for greater ecological and social fairness.
These ethics are not separate statements added after the design. They provide the basis for deciding what should be designed, how it should be implemented and who or what may be affected.
Permaculture in the Bangladesh Context
Permaculture cannot simply be imported as a collection of foreign examples. Its principles must be interpreted through the landscapes, seasons, cultures and lived realities of Bangladesh.
Traditional homesteads, mixed tree-crop systems, household ponds, seed preservation, shared labour and locally adapted practices already contain valuable ecological knowledge. At the same time, contemporary scientific knowledge and design tools can help address new challenges created by climate change, urbanization, pollution and changing livelihoods.
Permaculture Methods seeks to create a meaningful dialogue between Permaculture design, ecological science, practical experience and local knowledge. Our aim is not to romanticize the past or imitate models from elsewhere. It is to design intelligently for the places in which we live.
Who We Work With
Our training and consultancy may support:
Individuals interested in learning Permaculture
Families designing resilient homesteads
Farmers transitioning toward ecological production
Landowners seeking integrated site design
Schools and educational institutions
NGOs and community-based organizations
Development and humanitarian organizations
Trainers, facilitators and field practitioners
Social enterprises and responsible businesses
Communities developing locally appropriate initiatives
Our Commitment
Permaculture Methods is committed to presenting Permaculture with integrity. We do not promote instant solutions or claim that one technique can solve every problem. We recognize that responsible design requires time, observation, participation, appropriate knowledge and continued learning.
We aim to provide training that develops real design capacity and consultancy that respects the uniqueness of every site and community.
Permaculture is ultimately about relationships: relationships with land, water, food, community and the wider living world. Our purpose is to help people understand these relationships and design them with greater care.
